Cultural Competency in Healthcare

Cultural competency means recognizing that each person brings their own identity, history, family, values, and life experiences into healing. At Healing & Recovery Center of Arizona, it means listening first, treating people with dignity and respect, and understanding how culture shapes trauma, wellness, healing, and recovery.
Native-centered care recognizes the importance of family and kinship, community, identity, spirituality, traditional knowledge, and connection to culture, while also acknowledging and understanding the effects that historical and intergenerational trauma, displacement, and loss can have on individuals and families. At HRC, we honor Native knowledge and cultural strengths alongside evidence-based behavioral health practices.
What It Means
Our Approach to Cultural Competency
History & Resilience
We recognize the lasting effects of historical and intergenerational trauma while honoring the strength and resilience of Native people.
Healing & Connection
We support healing through culturally responsive care that strengthens connection to self, family, community, and culture.
Culture, Identity & Belonging
We honor each person's culture, identity, family, and community as important parts of healing and overall wellness.

Cultural Humility in Person-Centered Care
At HRC, culturally competent care honors who people are, where they come from, and what has shaped them-creating respectful, relevant healing grounded in Native strength and tradition, while centering the whole person.
